Thermal and non-thermal energies of solar flares

چکیده

The energy of the thermal flare plasma and the kinetic energy of the non-thermal electrons in 14 hard X-ray peaks from 9 medium-sized solar flares have been determined from RHESSI observations. The emissions have been carefully separated in the spectrum. The turnover or cutoff in the low-energy distribution of electrons has been studied by simulation and fitting, yielding a reliable lower limit to the non-thermal energy. It remains the largest contribution to the error budget. Other effects, such as albedo, non-uniform target ionization, hot target, and cross-sections on the spectrum have been studied. The errors of the thermal energy are about equally as large. They are due to the estimate of the flare volume, the assumption of the filling factor, and energy losses. Within a flare, the non-thermal/thermal ratio increases with accumulation time, as expected from loss of thermal energy due to radiative cooling or heat conduction. Our analysis suggests that the thermal and non-thermal energies are of the same magnitude. This surprising result may be interpreted by an efficient conversion of non-thermal energy to hot flare plasma.

Size dependence of solar X-ray flare properties

Non-thermal and thermal parameters of 85 solar flares of GOES class B1 to M6 (background subtracted classes A1 to M6) have been compared to each other. The hard X-ray flux has been measured by RHESSI and a spectral fitting provided flux and spectral index of the non-thermal emission, as well as temperature and emission measure of the thermal emission. The soft X-ray flux was taken from GOES mea...

Kinetic Study and Thermal Decomposition Behavior of Magnesium-Sodium Nitrate Based on Hydroxyl-Terminated Polybutadiene

This paper has been utilizing the simultaneous ThermoGravimetric analysis and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (TG–DSC) to investigate the thermal decomposition of magnesium-sodium nitrate pyrotechnic composition based HTPB resin. The thermal behaviors of different samples with various fuel-oxidizer ratio contents were determined. Decomposition kinetic was investigated by evaluating the in...

Deka-keV X-ray observations of solar bursts with WATCH/GRANAT: frequency distributions of burst parameters

Solar flare observations in the deka-keV range are performed by the WATCH experiment on board the GRANAT satellite. The WATCH experiment is presented, including the energy calibration as applied in the present work. The creation of the solar burst catalogue covering two years of observation is described and some examples of solar observations are given. The estimated energy releases in the flar...

Distinguishing Between Thermal and Non-Thermal Electrons in Solar Flares Using X-Ray Observations

1. Science Summary A large variety of astrophysical objects are sites of powerful particle acceleration and impulsive energy release. The Sun provides us with an excellent nearby opportunity to study the physical mechanisms that drive these processes. Rapid changes in the highly-stressed magnetic fields of solar flares lead to large-scale energy release of up to ~10 ergs per second. These explo...

YOHKOH remnants: partially occulted flares in hard X-rays

Context. Modern solar X-ray imagers did not breakthrough the problem of detailed diagnostics of faint hard X-ray sources in the presence of stronger ones. This is the case of the impulsive phase of solar flares in which footpoint sources are usually stronger than loop-top ones. Aims. For this aim, flares being partially occulted by the solar limb, are the best reservoir of our knowledge about h...
